BPC Action Applauds Advancement of the PROVE IT Act  in Energy and Environment

The Bipartisan Policy Center Action (BPC Action) applauds the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee for advancing the PROVE IT Act (S.1863) on a bipartisan basis at today’s markup. This bill—led by Sens. Chris Coons (D-DE) and Kevin Cramer (R-ND)—is critical to providing the U.S. with data to hold nations like China accountable for their emissions-heavy production by comparing it to our cleaner emissions profile, protecting American workers and the environment.

Specifically, the PROVE IT Act would

  • Prove that America is among the cleanest economies in the world—40% more carbon efficient than the world average;
  • Support expanded U.S. domestic manufacturing and production as opposed to offshoring those economic activities; and
  • Give U.S. officials the ability to defend and promote U.S. commercial interests when foreign governments move to impose import taxes on the U.S. that are based on inaccurate data.

“We’re glad to see members come together to advance reasonable climate legislation that will help to protect U.S. manufacturing and promote America’s carbon advantage around the globe,” said Michele Stockwell, President of BPC Action. “Kudos to Sens. Coons (D-DE) and Cramer (R-ND) for their hard work and bipartisan leadership.”

In addition to the lead sponsors, BPC Action applauds EPW members who voted to move this important legislation forward, including Sens. Ben Cardin (D-MD), John Fetterman (D-PA), Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Ed Markey (D-MA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Alex Padilla (D-CA), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), John Boozman (R-AR), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), and Bernie Sanders (I-VT). Along with other diverse organizations and trade associations, we stand ready to help drive this bill over the finish line.
