BPC Action Applauds Bipartisan, Bicameral White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, Hunger, and Health Act in Health

BPC Action commends Sens. Booker (D-NJ) and Braun (R-IN) and Reps. McGovern (D-MA) and Walorski (R-IN) for introducing legislation in collaboration with Chef Tom Colicchio to convene a national White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, Hunger, and Health. This bill aligns with a recommendation from a September 2021 report from BPC’s Food and Nutrition Security Task Force calling for a White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, Hunger and Health to convene federal, state, and local officials along with stakeholders in early 2022.

BPC Action is encouraged to see bipartisan support for this initiative and thanks Sens. Booker and Braun along with Reps. McGovern and Walorski for addressing systemic issues related to food and nutrition security. Specifically, we thank Chairman McGovern for hosting the “Ending Hunger in America” hearings and roundtables in the House Rules Committee and for collaborating with José Andrés, co-chair of BPC’s Food and Nutrition Task Force, to call for a White House Conference several months ago. We thank Senator Booker for his work on the Senate Agriculture Committee spotlighting the nutrition crisis’ disproportionate impact on communities of color. We also thank Senator Braun for his leadership of the Senate Agriculture Subcommittee on Food and Nutrition, Specialty Crops, Organics, and Research, as well as Rep. Walorski for her leadership of the Hunger Caucus alongside Rep. McGovern.

We are glad to see congressional support for whole-government approaches to ensuring food and nutrition security. BPC Action looks forward to working with Congress to pass this bill.
