06 Nov 2019 BPC Action Joins Over 20 Groups and Individuals Calling for Modernization Committee Extension in Government Reform
BPC Action has joined a diverse group of over 20 individuals and organizations, such as Issue One, R Street Institute, NALEO, and the Congressional Institute, calling for the extension of the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress in a letter to House leadership.
Its creation enjoyed near-unanimous House support on the floor, and the committee has carried forward this strong bipartisan approach throughout its tenure. Now it’s time to extend the committee’s mandate for an additional year so that it can continue its critical work of finding bipartisan solutions to modernizing and strengthening the Legislative Branch.
With its dozen hearings and 29 bipartisan recommendations, the committee has made significant strides in improving House technology, transparency, staff diversity and retention, and constituent accessibility and engagement. To build on this work and to continue driving reforms that will benefit both the institution and the American people, an extension is necessary.
As BPC President Jason Grumet mentions in a recent op-ed, this committee should give us “optimism for the ability of the Legislative Branch to overcome its dysfunction and address the challenges facing our nation.” We urge a bipartisan agreement to extend the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress.
