New Bipartisan Legislation an Important Step for Housing Affordability in Housing

BPC Action issued the following statement on the introduction of the Task Force on the Impact of the Affordable Housing Crisis Act:

“The current shortage of safe, affordable, and accessible homes in the United States has far-reaching consequences and affects a range of issues from economic growth to public health.  BPC Action commends Sen. Todd Young (R-IN) and his fifteen colleagues for their bipartisan collaboration to introduce the Task Force on the Impact of the Affordable Housing Crisis Act, which would create a task force to bring greater scrutiny to the alarming shortage of affordable rental homes in the United States, study its broad impacts, and recommend improvements to federal policy.

Importantly, this legislation recognizes the critical importance of affordable housing to the health and well-being of every American family. By requiring the task force to evaluate and quantify the impacts that the lack of affordable housing has on a host of social outcomes, this task force amplifies the call to grow the supply of affordable rental homes.

Housing affordability is a key driver of improved health, increased education attainment, and higher lifetime earnings. This legislation and the work of the task force will help further shine a light on the importance of federal investment in affordable homes—to low-income Americans, our economy, and our future—and BPC Action is committed to helping see it through the legislative process.”
